CHAPTER NINE

Danny worked ski patrol Saturday morning, so was late to the regular search and rescue meeting that afternoon. As Carrie called the meeting to order, he settled into a folding chair at the back of the room and studied his fellow volunteers. Could one of these people, all of whom he had literally trusted with his life at one time or another, really be set on hurting this organization that had helped so many people over the years? He dismissed each person in turn. She would never hurt anyone, especially not a fellow team member, and he was devoted to the group and the last person in the world Danny would expect to resort to violence.

By the time Carrie moved to the front of the room to begin the meeting, everyone had assembled, except Tony, who had moved to a rehab facility to continue his recovery, and Ted, who Danny was beginning to believe had left the group for good.

“Let’s get started, everyone,” Carrie said, and the murmur of conversation slowly died out.

Danny thought she looked a little more tense than usual, a little paler, but maybe he was only projecting his own worries on to her. Seeing her tires slashed like that had really shaken him, as if for the first time he had realized they were all in danger.

“First up is a reminder about the course, Ground Search Awareness, hosted by Colorado search and rescue June 25,” Carrie said. “Jake and Austen, you should definitely sign up for this, but it’s a good refresher for everyone.” She checked the notebook in front of her. “We also received a flyer from San Miguel County about a multiday course, Wilderness First Responder, they have planned for this summer, so be on the lookout for more information about that.”

The side door opened and they all turned to look as Tony, leg outstretched in a wheelchair fitted for the purpose, rolled into the building, the chair pushed by Ted. “I figured I’d better show up to keep you all in line,” Tony said.

Cries of surprise and welcome rang out as everyone rushed to greet the two new arrivals. “I called Ted and talked him into breaking me out of rehab for a couple of hours,” Tony said as he shook hands and accepted pats on the back from everyone as Ted stood behind him, beaming.

Leave it to Tony to figure out a way to bring Ted back into the fold, Danny thought. The two might have argued in the past about Ted’s role with the organization, but the older man wasn’t the type to let down anyone who needed his help, especially someone like Tony, whom Ted had mentored as he came up through the organization.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Tony told Carrie when some of the excitement over his arrival died down. “It took a little longer to maneuver this chair into the van Ted borrowed than we thought it would.”

“That’s okay,” Carrie said. “It’s great to see you.” She smiled at Ted.
